Just as a quick reminder, while we debate what this country can afford: the Iraq war cost us $2 TRILLION. I constantly forget where the decimal place goes, but it goes after the TRILLION.
TRILLION.
To rise another $4 TRILLION over the next 40 years (from 2013, the date of this article) due to the costs of taking care of the veterans we sent over there to get blown up, plus interest on the debt we incurred, and, I guess, hardware replacement costs.
TRILLION.
That’s like Carl Sagan saying “billions and billions” for a long time.
And I don’t recall any Republican Congressperson saying “but how will we pay for it?” Granted, my memory may be spotty, but I just don’t recall any significant discussion of that topic.
(And this, by the way, is just Iraq, not Afghanistan.)
