Hispanic polling

I think I heard something similar on a 538 podcast (?) recently. There is no monolithic Hispanic vote.

Selective offense and ‘not all white people’: We shouldn’t have to keep coddling y’all – TheGrio

https://thegrio.com/2022/07/18/selective-offense-and-not-all-white-people-we-shouldnt-have-to-keep-coddling-yall/

Another spin on the “not all [blank]” thing. Eventually I’ll truly get it.

Always hard to get yelled at by a Black person*, but if we cut to the chase:

«I’ve said previously that when Black people discuss whiteness, unless we name specific individuals we are talking about, we are referring to the “collective whiteness that unites white people even when y’all aren’t all on the same page or following the same agenda or falling into the same category. It’s that “general you” versus “specific you” type of thing.”»

*’Cause, ya know, they’re/y’all’re generally right. Unjustified anger is easier to brush off.

«But please believe that if you benefit from these systems and constructs, even in the slightest, and you aren’t doing anything to help dismantle them, then yes, maybe YOU’RE THE REAL RACIST.

To put it plainly, get your asses off your shoulders and do something.»

Sigh. But this armchair is so comfortable.

The U.S. education system gets decent value for money

https://noahpinion.substack.com/p/the-us-education-system-gets-decent

Noah Smith, Bloomberg economist type, on the conservative lie that public education is a waste of money. (Except he’s polite and calls it a “myth”.)

«There are three basic facts that, taken together, demonstrate that we get pretty good value for our money:

1. Our education system produces generally above-average results.

2. Our education system doesn’t really cost a lot.

3. Spending more on public schools pretty reliably improves outcomes.

Let’s go through the evidence for each of these facts.

And off he goes.

(Probably paywalled, but generally worth the money, so cough up, comfortable people.)

Democrats Close To Changing Laws On Popular Vote

Hey, we must be making progress if we’re making conservatives nervous!

«If not stopped, the American system of presidential elections will be changed potentially forever.»

Yep, that’s pretty much the point, Federalist. Except nothing is forever, apart from the need for eternal vigilance if we actually get this to happen.

Act relating to equality and a prohibition against discrimination (Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act) – Lovdata

Today’s discovery: In one of the countries Donald Trump considers NOT a shithole country:

«Discrimination on the basis of gender, pregnancy, leave in connection with childbirth or adoption, care responsibilities, ethnicity, religion, belief, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age or combinations of these factors is prohibited.»

German nouns r awesome

German nouns are awesome. I think Wikipedia mistranslated this one, though, so I’m going to try. Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer is “flying [things] defense cannons tank”. (“Panzer”, btw, doesn’t mean “panther” (and, boy howdy, does it not mean “cheetah”), it means “armor”, from the French “pancier”, breastplate.)
