On racism and xenophobia

Cognoscente of Cognomens (@ShimminyKricket) Tweeted: Trump is genuinely popular with millions of people. That fact can’t be sidestepped with nonsense like “brainwashing”. Trump is an accurate reflection of part of what America is.

Yup. It was unfortunate of Hillary to put it like she did, but there is a sizeable chunk of people in this country who are locked in to their positions of believing the old days were the best and they want to go back, no matter what.

And that’s putting it charitably. Some folks are just outright white supremacists and want to take what isn’t theirs, plain and simple. We can talk about the psychology of that, but it’s the state of things.

And while I’m nattering: in this part of the world, it’s a problem with white folks, but in other parts of the world, there’s plenty of ugliness without whiteness being in play. Check out this essay: https://medium.com/@nettlefish/beyond-authenticity-the-spectre-of-han-hegemony-c1e3b5fc1b98. Also, consider what’s happening with Hindu nationalism in India these days. It’s not just a matter of a national people asserting themselves in the face of white hegemony.

This is an old enough problem that 2,500 (or so) year old scripture has something to say: “When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt….”
