Republican Party Favorability Highest in Seven Years

https://news.gallup.com/poll/242906/republican-party-favorability-highest-seven-years.aspx

«Only one other time in the last decade has the Republican Party had a significantly higher score than the Democratic Party. That one exception came in November 2014, immediately after elections that saw Republicans capture control of the Senate and expand their majority in the House, when 42% rated the GOP favorably and 36% the Democrats.»

The blue wave is not a weather event, as Jason Kander says. It doesn’t just happen.

Russia woos white South African farmers – The Washington Post

This is perfect. Conservatives who don’t like the direction this country is taking can ACTUALLY MOVE TO RUSSIA.

«Poluboyarenko, however, is a prominent voice for the outreach. He gained attention earlier this year after helping an 11-member German family, outraged by sex education in Western schools, to settle in Russia.

Addressing the du Toits at his “Motherland” dairy farm in Kosyakovo, about 60 miles southeast of Moscow, general director Mikhail Baranov told the father and son: “You can be sure of one thing. You won’t find liberalism here, but family values instead.”»

Emptywheel’s Marcy Wheeler knows more than she tells, but she tells a lot – Columbia Journalism Review

Interesting article from the Columbia Journalism Review (a fairly prestigious site, if I understand correctly).

«In the sometimes murky world of national security reporters, few people are wrong less often than Marcy Wheeler. Wheeler’s insights, gleaned from tireless, detailed reading of declassified documents, are unique because they rely on public information, rather than access, and because Wheeler takes great pains to show her work. The longtime blogger’s site Emptywheel focuses […]»

Not everybody is plugged in

Got a ride from a Lyft/Uber driver yesterday who didn’t really know about the Kavanaugh thing. All he knew was some government official was accused of bad behavior by some woman, again. Couldn’t remember his name, except that it started with a “K” sound and had some syllables.

So, there’s that.

Opinion | We Are Not the Resistance – The New York Times

(Author of /The New Jim Crow/, not some freshman essayist.)

«But the time may have come to take the downsides more seriously. Resistance is a reactive state of mind. While it can be necessary for survival and to prevent catastrophic harm, it can also tempt us to set our sights too low and to restrict our field of vision to the next election cycle, leading us to forget our ultimate purpose and place in history.

The disorienting nature of Trump’s presidency has already managed to obscure what should be an obvious fact: Viewed from the broad sweep of history, Donald Trump is the resistance. We are not.»

Russia is working to break democracy

Russia is working to break democracy by boosting extremes on both sides away from moderate, centrist parties.

Republicans hoped voters would forget they tried to kill Obamacare. They bet wrong.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/09/21/republicans-pre-existing-conditions-obamacare-repeal-voters-remember-column/1366662002/

«So 10 Republican senators and 28 GOP House members recently signed on to bills that claim to offer pre-existing condition protections. Spoiler alert: they don’t. The bills would, in fact, require insurance to be offered to people with pre-existing conditions. However, they wouldn’t require that insurance companies cover their actual pre-existing conditions. Consider it a classic even-year proposal — enough to campaign on, but nothing to govern with.»

There is no such thing as “throwing like a girl.” There is being taught to throw and not being taught to throw.»
