2024 NC election results: control of state legislature | Raleigh News & Observer

«In another close contest, Rep. Tricia Cotham led her opponent, Democrat Nicole Sidman, with all precincts reporting.»

This is the woman who switched parties shortly after her election last time, giving Republicans a supermajority in the NC legislature.

How is this even possible?

(N&O says we might have broken the supermajority this time anyway, in the House.)

Pa. officials have begun processing mail ballots. Here’s what to expect for the rest of the day and night.

Will be nice if state election boards have already had adversarial tabletop exercises to anticipate as much of this as possible.

«Days before the election right-wing activists lodged thousands of baseless challenges to mail ballot applications — sowing more confusion ahead of the election and likely delaying the counting of any ballots submitted by those voters.»

This Black Fungus Might Be Healing Chernobyl By Drinking Radiation—A Biologist Explains | Forbes

Science fiction! Years ago, a relative did Actual Research (lab and all) on a particular fungus (cryptococcus, I think), and I knew melanin was an ionizing radiation and oxidation absorber used by fungi as a defense mechanism, but this….

«Further research discovered that C. sphaerospermum and some other black fungi species, like Wangiella dermatitis and Cryptococcus neoformans, possessed melanin, the pigment responsible for human skin color. However, in these fungi, the melanin served a different purpose: it absorbed radiation, which was then converted into usable energy, allowing it to grow in areas with intense radioactive exposure.»

We’re going to have do this every time for a generation

This is not a happy thought, but it occurs to me that we’re going to have to go through this white-knuckle journey every four years for a long time. Honestly, 50% of America is either filled with hatred and/or anger, or with the kind of selfishness that says “I don’t care, I want mine.” They still want to throw bricks through the living room window, and demagogues are still willing to whip them up, with the help of the mainstream media.

Even every two years, because Congress is so important. Whoever wins, there’s (probably) going to be backlash in two years, and we’ll either have to get out and make sure we take Congress back, or we’ll have to defend what we’ve got from the Republicans, who will be just as whipped up as they are now.

“The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.”

Bleah.

Winner of NC 1st district may decide control of the US House | Raleigh News & Observer

«Legislators are able to do this by looking at the past habits of the electorate and placing people of similar voting tendencies into the same districts.»

This. Even if you are in a ruby red district, there is STILL value in voting blue. It affects redistricting in the future. I know that’s small comfort, but there is ALWAYS value in making your voice heard.
